The Architectural Legacy of Zvi Hecker: Cultural Significance and Future Impact
The exhibition at Liebling House was created following a personal letter left by architect Zvi Hecker to Sharon Golan, our lab director, encompassing his wish to exhibit his works at Liebling House. The exhibition combines sketches he created for projects designed for his daughter, Ella, who lived throughout her life in two of his prominent buildings: Dubiner House and the Spiral House in Ramat Gan.
As the exhibition ends, a dramatic decision has been made to demolish Ramot Polin, one of Hecker's iconic neighborhoods in Jerusalem, for an urban renewal project. This decision raises questions about Hecker's legacy and the status of architecture within the cultural fabric of Israeli society. Hecker's work, known for its architectural quality and groundbreaking innovation, created a unique dialogue that combined form, functionality, and a connection to the environment. His contributions significantly shaped spatial and cultural perceptions in Israel and have been recognized internationally.
The panel assembled for this event will address several fundamental questions: How can we preserve architectural works that have become essential to our local culture? What would be revealed about our society if we allowed these works to disappear? How can we protect Zvi Hecker's vision and unique contributions, especially when his works are at risk of destruction?
