From the Research Lab: Palestine and the World of Tomorrow / Erich Mendelsohn’s Architectural Answer to the Zionist Project

Program Director Sharon Golan Yaron is inviting Prof. Ita Heinze-Greenberg, Emerita ETH Zurich to speak about Architect Erich Mendelsohn, who was probably the internationally best known architect working in Palestine between 1934 and 1941. He planned and built projects that were among the largest in the country. His buildings testify to a special sensitivity for the country and its old and new inhabitants; they are akin to a critical regionalism avant la lettre. He saw in this not only an aesthetic but also a cultural-political imperative. His words of warning not to transfer Europe unfiltered to Palestine, but to search for an East-West synthesis, did not always fall on open ears. With his pamphlet "Palestine and the World of Tomorrow," published in Jerusalem in 1940, he presented insights that are still relevant today. The session will be joined by Prf.
