Architect Tim Rieniets and Sharon Golan-Yaron, program director of the Liebling Haus, discuss the art of altering. Conversion, adaptation, and reuse are as old as architecture itself. The industrialization of the construction industry and the insatiable hunger for progress normalized the demolition of existing buildings to construct new ones. But circumstances have changed; modernity's reformative potential was exhausted, revealing the severe environmental impact of the construction industry that consumes more resources than any other sector. Our buildings are historical witnesses, rich repositories of raw materials and memories – both equally important to our cities' sustainable development. More than just practicality, utilizing these resources has incredible architectural potential.

Architect Tim Rieniets has dedicated his career to researching and communicating contemporary issues on architecture and urban planning. Professor of Urban and Regional Development in Hanover, Rieniets authored many articles and books, including the recently published Umbaukultur – The Architecture of Altering.
